Ludmila Steckelberg de Santana

From The Absence of All Colors series, the triptych The Sacred Family

The technique used in my work, is the scanning of photos from my old family albums, from which I cut and delete the images of people already diseased. The idea is to show images vanishing as people do when they part from this world, leaving physical emptiness.

The pieces discusses not only the physicality of this matter, but they work as a reverse remainder of the personage, which symbolizes all the aspects, specially the emotional ones, related to the disappearing of beloved people from our sights, from our life. It is like I am taking their images to my private collection of memories, in a selfish act.

In the cut intent, the close contact with the person’s image makes me get in touch with details of these individuals, in the case of this three samples, a relative, that sometimes I knew, and sometimes not. This detail in the production of the piece, creates an almost intimate connection with me and the individual I am cutting off, transforming the process in a extremely intense experience.

I created this arrangement of three images with the intention to show my considerations about how sacred family bonds are; displaying: Mother, Father and Daughter, in this case me, incarnated in one of the disincarnate relative that makes part of my narrative.
